The safflower is grown for its seed, which ripens from August to early September. The seed contains 45–55 % oil, which is cold-pressed and used in the same way as, for example, sunflower oil. It is very important for human nourishment. Compared to sunflower oil, however, it contains more linoleic acid – up to 80%. This acid belongs to the essential unsaturated fatty acids, mainly containing omega-6.
Due to its resistance to drought, we can also use safflower as an intercrop, for green fertilizer or fodder.
